Article in French about a new book of essays responding to the Hungarian-background French president's deeply insulting July 2007 speech to Africans which he made in Dakar. The gist of his remarks was that "Africa is still outside history." Whaa???

A huge thumbs-down for Nicolas Sarkozy's condescending "Africa is still 'outside history'" speech - about African people, uttered to their faces but as though they really weren't there, at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Senegal. Un discours absolument chocquant. Some of us didn't know it was possible for some Europeans to still have it in themselves to deliver comments like these!

Wow! Economics: Redefining Progress using the GPI instead of GDP (GPI = Genuine Progress Indicator). "One of the architects of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Simon Küznets, cautioned against using the GDP as a measure of the welfare of a nation. Some 32 years after his lament, Redefining Progress, an economic research think tank developed the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI). For the first time, a holistic measure of the welfare of a nation had been constructed."- from fiscallygreen.ca
